chapter 35

Heather . . .

She had noticed the way Thoran Ginott looked at her within the confines of the arena. Standing close enough for her to smell his musky scent, she'd also noticed the growing, animalistic lust in his eyes.

She looked about her current surroundings. No longer a captive held behind metal bars, she still was within a cage, although this particular cage was luxuriously adorned. Brought here soon after her conversation with Ginott, she was told that this was one of his private suites of rooms within the Winforge arena facilities. Once settled in, two waif-thin alien females attended her, directed her where to bathe. Then, together, they spent several hours doing things to her hair, applying facial makeup in such a way that she looked like a different person--one more sophisticated, yet more innocent at the same time. Heather was well aware what all the pampering was leading up to.

Why was it some powerful males felt they could just take what they wanted? She thought of Cam. He was truly wonderful. Honest and considerate and always mindful of her feelings--of her needs. But he was also incredibly naive. Her thoughts flashed back to the HyperCrell Christmas party, held over a year earlier. They'd been geographically separated for some time by then. She was still at home, living a simple life back in Larksburg Stand, mostly working at the Drake Cafe. Cam, finishing school at Stanford, living in San Jose, California, was interning at one of the world's premiere tech companies. She'd flown out to see him--a spur of the moment thing--hoping that would bring them closer together. She'd needed to see if their waning relationship was worth salvaging.

She'd never worn evening attire like she did that night--exchanging her Nike's for high heels, her skinny jeans and T-shirts for a low-cut, skimpy, little black dress that seemed to attract the attention of virtually every man in close proximity to her. While Cameron was aware of the attention being drawn her way, in no way was he jealous or worried. But he should have been worried and he should have been less trusting. Not of her, but of the one person he'd placed so high up on a pedestal: his boss, the president and CEO of HyperCrell. The flamboyant, handsome, consummate lady's man, Tony Ordell. She had read about him even prior to her visit. The guy dated supermodels and actresses.

The party was everything she had hoped and expected it to be. Cam was acknowledged for his outstanding work, his contributions at HyperCrell. Ordell lavished him with an ultra-expensive gift, some kind of high-end mountain bike. Cam, beyond doubt, was having the best night of his life, so she never was able to tell him of her ordeal there. When she went to the ladies room, Tony Ordell was waiting right outside the door when she exited. He made a move on her that was so surprising, so abrupt, she still, even today, couldn't come to terms with the events that followed.
